Ducksoo Kim, MD brings innovative interventional radiology procedures to BMC

BMC's newly appointed chief of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology and professor of Radiology, Ducksoo Kim, MD, has expanded the range of services offered to patients by providing procedures previously unavailable at BMC and, in some cases, New England.

Kim had previously served for seven years as director of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology and professor of radiology and surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. Prior to that, he was chief of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and associate professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School for 16 years.

In 1977, Kim pioneered the nonsurgical treatment of uterine fibroid tumors along with Dr. Stephen Baer, an ob/gyn physician at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates. Together, they were the first New England practitioners to perform uterine fibroid embolization. This minimally invasive procedure injects synthetic particles the size of sand into uterine arteries, blocking blood flow to the fibroid causing it to shrink. The procedure takes less than one hour and patients are released the following day. Kim has successfully treated more than 1,200 women over the past nine years.

Dr. Kim's clinical focus is diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease using imaging modalities. Procedures include angioplasty or stenting of blockages in blood vessels such as carotid, renal, mesenteric, femoral and aortoiliac arteries; failing hemodialysis fistula/graft; and, embolization of various tumors and hemorrhagic conditions. He also has extensive experience in the treatment of obstructive urinary and biliary disorders with percutaneous catheter placement; vertebral compression fractures with vetebroplasty/kyphoplasty; varicose veins with endovenous laser; and, outpatient embolization procedures of ovarian varices for chronic pelvic congestion syndrome as well as testicular veins for varicocele.

"Dr. Kim is a recognized national and international expert," said Alexander Norbash, MD, chief of the Division of Radiology at BMC and professor of radiology at BUSM. "We are fortunate and grateful to have him join us at BUMC."

Kim received his medical degree at Catholic University Medical College in South Korea. He interned at McKeesport Hospital in McKeesport, Penn., and performed his residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, N.J. He completed a National Institutes of Health fellowship in cardiovascular and interventional radiology at Stanford University Medical Center.
